Each year, the Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC) distributes Thanksgiving Baskets to 2,000 needy families; providing Thanksgiving dinners to feed over 12,000 individuals each year. Over the past 35 seasons, UAC has fed over 200,000 Philadelphia residents!

Now in its our 36th season of giving, the UAC Thanksgiving Basket Program, in partnership with Brown's Family ShopRite, are working to distribute 2,000 baskets this Thanksgiving. Each basket contains one turkey, which UAC fundraises for each year at a cost of $20. Brown’s Family ShopRite then matches that donation with all the fixings: mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, fresh fruit, and an apple pie! Our partner, PepsiCo, generously donates a 2-liter of Pepsi for each basket. The total basket value is $50.

WHY THE NEED? POVERTY IN PHILADELPHIA

UAC’s efforts to feed those in poverty during this time of year are critical as Philadelphia’s poverty rate continues to climb. Over 400,000 of Philadelphians live in poverty, giving Philadelphia the second highest poverty rate (28%) among the nation’s largest cities. Additionally, more than 470,000 Philadelphia residents are eligible for food stamps, but not all receive them. That’s 3 out of every 10 city residents! Recently, Philly.com published a story that Philadelphia has the highest deep-poverty rate among the 10 largest cities. “Philadelphia's deep-poverty rate is 12.3 percent, or around 186,000 people - 60,000 of whom are children.”
