The Campaign for Working Families

A partnership that promotes increased resources for low wage working families by providing free filing of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and connecting Philadelphia residents to other tax credits, work supports and asset-building resources.  Trains volunteers and operates free tax filing sites throughout Philadelphia. Nu Sigma Youth Services


A youth development and cultural enrichment program for African American male youths ages 6 through 18. The program has 5 goals: Increase skills among participants to resist peer pressure through leadership development and training; Increase the knowledge of participants of the negative consequences of involvement with negative behaviors such as substance abuse, violence and high-risk sexual activity; Increase awareness of cultural values and heritage; Increase awareness of careers and educational opportunities; Provide on-going support for program participants through mentoring by African American males.

Philadelphia Anti-Drug/Anti-Violence Network (PAAN)

Promotes community safety through services that reduce drug abuse and violence as well as to help at-risk youth develop positive alternatives that will return them to the mainstream of society. Since its inception in 1989, PAAN has utilized its expertise to meet these objectives through street-based community outreach and intervention programs. PAAN is the premier street-based and community violence prevention agency in the City. It uses a diverse staff consisting of non-civil service, grassroots and professional workers (70% African-American, 10% Asian, 10% Caucasian, and 10% Latino) to connect with citizens within their own neighborhoods.

Saving Homes Saving Neighborhoods

A campaign in West Oak Lane and Southwest Philadelphia to help homeowners who are behind paying mortgages and are worried about their future. Addresses the impact of predatory lenders head-on by working at the neighborhood level and going door-to-door to provide easy access to advice, counseling and good loans. A program developed by GPUAC, The Reinvestment Fund (TRF), Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Delaware Valley (CCCS) and Community Legal Services (CLS), in partnership with Southwest CDC and OARC/West Oak Lane CDC.

Thanksgiving Basket Program

Distributes turkey baskets - with all the trimmings - to disadvantaged families throughout Philadelphia. The 2008 program was co-sponsored by the Brown's Family ShopRite, The Pepsi Bottling Group, and Pennsylvania State Representatives Harold James, W. Curtis Thomas, Ronald Waters, and Jewell Williams.
