UAC Gets Fit!

The most unexpected dangerous place people would think to be is their office desk! However sitting there can at your work desk can cause more harm than good on your body.

A lot of workplaces require sitting behind a desk or in a meeting for 90% of your work day.

The effects of sitting for a long period of time can lead to health problems and cause an early death. Research shows that sedentary work results in a slower metabolism and increased risk for stroke and heart disease. Dr. James Levine, endocrinologist, is a leading researcher on the health hazards of sitting too much and has defined this epidemic as “The New Smoking.” Evidence found that sitting for 11 or more hours increased risk of death by 40%.

There must be efforts made to reshape the work environment in order to reduce these possible health risks!!!

UAC has tackled this dilemma hands on offering its employees the option to participate in various Health and Wellness Activities over the years. Last year, UAC had its very own Weight Watchers Club! This year UAC is offering two exciting programs at NO COST to employees, “Walk the Stairs” and “Line Dancing.” With summer just around the corner, UAC has found ways to encourage employees to exercise while at work. Employees can lose a few pounds and get their blood pressure down while not having to take time out of their busy work schedules to go to the gym. Each week Monday-Thursday, employees walk the UAC steps from the lobby to the 7th floor.  On Fridays, UAC mixes it up with Line Dancing instructed by our very own Demetra Crockett, Assistant to the Director of Youth Division.  Employees have the opportunity to learn new steps and show off their own!

Although many people dread exercising, UAC has now made it a fun way to take a break from work and mingle with other co-workers while achieving a healthier lifestyle.  Employees interested in breaking a sweat should grab their sneakers and a co-worker and get ready to have a good time!

RSVP to Kim Neely, kneely@uac.org to reserve a spot for Line Dancing on Fridays and we will see you on the stairs every Monday-Thursday at 12:30PM!
