FAN Club Members from Germantown High School Visit

Philadelphia Federal Credit Union

Philadelphia, PA – On November 15, 2004, PFCU welcomed 20 Germantown High School seniors who are members of the Financial Advancement Network or FAN Club program.   The purpose of the field trip was to expose the students to the credit union environment.   The agenda included a lesson about the history of credit unions and their founding philosophy, which is still very much alive today.   In addition, the students learned about the products and services that are available at PFCU and the importance of beginning a savings plan.   To assist them with that goal, PFCU opened accounts for interested students and provided the initial $5 deposit, paid for their first book of checks and gave them a PFCU journal and pen to keep track of their financial matters.   The day concluded with a tour of Philadelphia Federal Credit Union so the students could get a clear picture on how PFCU operates by receiving a brief description of each department's function within the organization.

The Financial Advancement Network Clubs – or FAN Clubs – are a vehicle to get financial literacy education into Philadelphia neighborhoods and schools, and increase the awareness of healthy personal financial habits in urban communities.   They are designed to empower club members through hands-on instruction from financial education experts as well as through peer support.   The club at Germantown High School was adopted to teach relevant money management topics to juniors and seniors in a school setting.   The FAN Clubs are organized by the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, which is involved in various financial literacy education initiatives throughout the Delaware Valley.

PFCU was happy to open its doors to the high school seniors because they are committed to financial literacy, especially for the young leaders in their communities that are pursuing their life's desires and dreams.

Philadelphia Federal Credit Union was founded in 1951 and is currently among the top credit unions in the city serving the Northeast, Northwest Philadelphia and Bloomsburg, PA communities, in addition to, the owners, employees and directors of over 600 organizations throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition brings together business and community leaders to solve urban problems, operates programs, and supports an array of government and private sector-sponsored initiatives to help the disadvantaged and working poor of the Metropolitan Philadelphia region.
