Sun Life Financial Recognizes Philadelphia Nonprofits and Three College-bound High School Seniors as Sun Life Rising Stars

Sun Life Financial Inc. (NYSE: SLF, TSX: SLF) today announced Philadelphia’s Sun Life Rising Star Awards program winners. The financial services company awarded a total of $165,000 in grants and scholarships to three youth-oriented nonprofits and to an exemplary student nominated by each organization. The Sun Life Rising Star Awards program aims to address low high school graduation rates in large urban school districts by providing financial and educational resources to students and nonprofit organizations committed to increasing success in high school and beyond.

Three Philadelphia Students Win Surprise Scholarships

For three Philadelphia high school students, an evening field trip to the museum turned into a surprise that may change their lives.

Seniors Tiffany Collins, Jamal Robinson, and Ramean Clowney thought they were attending a speaking event at the Philadelphia Museum of Art last week, only to discover they had received Sun Life Rising Star scholarships. At the awards ceremony in the museum auditorium, each received $5,000 toward his or her college education.

Comcast Offers Low-Cost Internet and Computers

Tens of thousands of Philadelphia-area households could get low-cost computers and Internet service under a new program from Comcast.

When Comcast was seeking FCC approval of its acquisition of NBC Universal, the company committed to a program to help bridge the digital divide. The result is its Internet Essentials programs, which executive vice president David Cohen said is available nationwide to any family in a Comcast service area with a child eligible for free school lunches.

Arise Academy Charter High School Appoints New CEO

The board of directors of Arise Academy Charter High School, the nation's first public charter high school dedicated exclusively to students in foster care, has announced the appointment of its new CEO. Gabriel Kuriloff was approved by the board during a meeting on Wednesday. He will take the reins at the high school for the coming 2011-12 school year.

Jill Welsh-Davis, President of the Arise Board of Directors said, "Gabriel is an exceptional, proven leader. His approach to school leadership is innovative, compassionate, and purposeful."
